February 22, 2008, (San Diego, CA ) Thunderboats Unlimited of San Diego announce the 2008 Thunderboat Regatta to be held on Mission Bay, September 19-21, 2008.

Thunderboats Unlimited is proud to additionally announce an historic partnership with a new group from Seattle, WA led by Unlimited Hydroplane owner/driver Dr. Ken Muscatel. “San Diego has a new partner in the Thunderboat Regatta. Together with the great team at Thunderboats Unlimited, this new partnership has a fortified commitment to continue and expand the vision Bill Muncey had from the beginning, to bring the best in boat racing and family entertainment to Mission Bay for years to come” proclaimed Dr. Muscatel.

Since the sixties Thunderboats have roared and sprayed their enormous roostertails over Mission Bay. The rich heritage of this event crosses over several generations. The world’s fastest Unlimited Hydroplane race boats will challenge the course built specifically for them on Mission Bay, and for the 42nd time compete for the honor of winning the Bill Muncey Cup. In addition to three days of racing, the Thunderboat Regatta also features a weekend full of activities, interactive displays for the kid’s and the annual Saturday Night Fireworks Extravaganza making this one of the best San Diego events of the year.

The Thunderboat Regatta adds over $20 million dollars to the San Diego economy each year. As one of southern California’s premier motorsport events, the Thunderboat Regatta draws sports fans from all over the US and abroad to the Mission Bay race course. It also serves as one of the San Diego tourism industries biggest weekends filling hotels, restaurants, and the regions resorts and destinations.

Thunderboats Unlimited, Inc. is a non-profit corporation established by a group of committed Southern California racing enthusiasts, to promote powerboat racing in San Diego, and increase tourism in the beach area. The group was initially brought together by the late legendary hydroplane racer Bill Muncey, for whom the 2½ mile race course is named, but soon grew to include individuals from all aspects of the community.

A Board of Governors was formed to oversee race operations and give fans in attendance an enjoyable, superb regatta. Today the Board consists of members whose dedication to excellence ensures that world-class powerboat racing will continue to be an integral piece of the fabric of life in
America's Finest City.
